Charnwood Forest Captain plays 150 holes in 14 hours
Captain of Charnwood Forest Golf Club, Steve Ackling, completed 150 holes in 13 hours 50 minutes raising £2,200 for Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People and Teenage Cancer Trust
On 1st June 2012, the Captain of Charnwood Forest Golf Club, Steve Ackling, completed 150 holes in 13 hours 50 minutes raising £2,200 for Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People and Teenage Cancer Trust.
In an attempt to recreate a feat first performed by member Harry Flude, 99 years ago to the day, Steve hit his first ball on the first tee at Charnwood Forest Golf Club, the oldest club in Leicestershire, at 5am.
At 6.50pm, he holed out for a par 4 having completed 8 rounds and 6 holes of golf. Having walked the 150 holes, estimated at 30 miles, of this picturesque golf course in an average time of 93 minutes for each 18 hole round Steve was understandably a little tired – he politely declined offers from members to join them in the monthly medal the next day!
With medal cards completed for every round, Steve remarkably played close to his 12 handicap, with an average gross score of 82 across the 150 holes.
The fifth round was the most memorable with a gross score of 74 and an eagle two at the 90th hole being greeted with massive cheers from members assembled in front of the clubhouse.
In total, Steve scored 57 pars, 3 birdies, 1 eagle and only lost one ball, following a wayward tee shot.
Following his historic feat, Steve was quick to thank all who had supported him saying, ‘the caddies, ball spotters and helpers have been magnificent all day and I would like to thank both them and everyone who has made donations or sponsored me in this challenge.
