Burhill Golf & Leisure leads charity coast-to-coast bike ride
Burhill Golf & Leisure CEO Colin Mayes is leading a charity coast-to-coast bike ride in August in aid of the Armed Forces Memorial
Colin Mayes, plus Burhill colleagues David Cook and Andy Owen, will lead an eight-strong team of golf industry professional on the 150-mile ride with the goal of raising £20,000 to purchase four, six-seater Club Car vehicles to transport elderly and grief-stricken relatives around the 150-acre National Memorial Arboretum in Shropshire.
Kevin Hart of Club Car, who is a former Royal Navy captain, told me that the site needs transportation to take elderly relatives around the site, and it was suggested that four golf buggies would be ideal, explained Mayes, who last year led a team to raise £10,000 for The Red Cross by completing The Three Peaks Challenge in less than 24 hours. The Armed Forces Memorial is this country s war memorial for servicemen and women who have been killed in conflict since the Second World War, and it is well worth visiting.
We feel we can help the families visiting the memorial to remember their loved ones, and we would ask colleagues in the golf industry to consider sponsoring the bike ride to help us purchase the Club Car transportation vehicles.
Joining Kevin and the Burhill team are Andrew Brown (Toro), Christian Grisard van Roey (Toro), Bruce Glasco (Troon Golf) and golf course designer Jonathan Gaunt. The group will cycle west to east from Whitehaven to Tynemouth along the route of Hadrian s Wall, aiming to complete the route in two-and-a-half days.
