A message from the editor, Neil Tappin:
The vagaries of the magazine production cycle mean I am sitting down to write my editor’s letter on the Monday after the US Open. Pinehurst No.2 was a stage befitting of such an exciting tournament and Bryson DeChambeau deserves huge praise for the sheer grit and determination that enabled him to capture his second Major title.
It was a tournament that will also live long in the memory as a reminder of just how cruel this sport can be. Rory McIlroy, having clearly learned difficult lessons from other Major Championship near-misses, played with power and control, with a deft touch and with the patience of a seasoned professional.
And then, right at the very end, the golfing gods struck and two relatively straightforward short putts slipped by. All that hard work and brilliant play was undermined in a flash. It was tough to watch.
Finding a silver lining in all of this is a challenge up there with those devilishly quick Pinehurst greens, but with The Open Championship just around the corner, McIlroy can’t afford to stew for long. Shortly after Royal Troon, the world’s best men and women will be in Paris for the Olympics Games.
To get you in the mood, we’ve combined preview pieces around The Open and the Olympics with some game-changing instruction advice to help all areas of your game. No matter whether you are watching, playing or both, there should be plenty within this issue to get your teeth into...
