Sky Sports links up with Matchplay Championship
Broadcaster announces it will be screening the finals of one of the biggest amateur golf tournaments in the UK and Ireland
The finals of one of Europe’s biggest amateur golf tournaments will be screened on Sky Sports after an exclusive deal with the broadcaster.
The Matchplay Championship, which attracts more than 2,300 entrants from across the UK and Ireland, has struck a deal with BSkyB to screen the regional finals and the Grand Final on their sports channels.
Cameras will be at both regional finals and the Grand Finals for both the 2008/09 event and next year’s competition.
This year’s southern regional final will be played at Marriott St Pierre’s Old Course in Chepstow and the northern equivalent at Marriott Hollins Hall on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors.
The 2008/09 Grand Final will be played at another Marriott resort; the spectacular Taba Heights in Egypt; set against a backdrop of the Red Sea on the eastern coast of the Sinai Peninsula.
John Woosey, managing director of the competition organiser, The Golfer’s Club, said: “It will be interesting to see how players’ scores are affected by the cameras and whether the thought of everyone at home dissecting their performance will spur them on or see them buckle under the pressure.”
For an entry fee of only £20 per person, 32 lucky golfers will be flown out for a dream week in Egypt.
