St Andrews hole-by-hole guide: Hole 1, Burn
A detailed hole-by-hole guide to St Andrews Old Course, home of the 150th Open Championship. Get to know the course and find out where this year's Claret Jug may be won and lost this year

Hole 1, Burn 376 yards Par 4
The fairway at the 1st is 126 yards wide so it's not the most intimidating tee shot on the course. If wind assisted some of the pros may be tempted to take the burn on, but it's not the safe play and a good birdie opportunity can be set up with a long iron and short pitch. The green has a few slopes at the back whilst the front half is fairly flat.
