Levet celebration threatens Open appearance

Thomas Levet could be forced to pull out of the Open after sustaining an injury while jumping in a lake at Le Golf National

Thomas Levet's celebration after winning the French Open last week has jeopardised his place in the Open. The Frenchman jumped into a greenside lake after winning his national championship last Sunday and suffered a small fracture to his shin. He is now in a cast and has been forced to pull out of this week's Scottish Open.

The 42-year-old qualified for the Open at Suningdale and claimed the French Open by a shot last week at Le Golf National. He will now undergo intensive treatment on his shin before deciding whether to compete at Royal St George's next week.

Levet has an affinity with the Open after coming so close to winning it at Muirfield in 2002 when he lost in a play-off to Ernie Els. He joins a substantial injury list with Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh battling to make it to Sandwich and Alvaro Quiros having already withdrawn.
