Burrows conquers The Belfry in BBP
The Midlands Regional Finals proved to be a tight affair
Yesterday saw the second of the BBP Regional Finals take place, and this time it was the turn of the competitors from the Midlands Region to demonstrate their putting prowess.
They qualified to take part in the Regional Final at The Belfry and were treated to a fun day of putting on the signature green in front of the famous hotel - scene of so many exciting Ryder Cup battles over the years.
Once again competitors were asked to select an Odyssey putter and a Callaway golf ball from the extensive choice on offer before completing a 36 hole strokeplay tournament. This time around the competition was even tougher for one of just eight spots in the matchplay knockout stages with several of the competitors tied on the same score after 36 holes, forcing a countback. The matches that followed proved to be every bit as tight with three of the matches all-square after 18 holes and forced into a sudden death play-off.
The first putting tussle continued to the 21st and the others reached the 22nd and 23rd holes before they were decided! But it was 20-year-old putter Luke Burrows from Cosby Golf Club who had the sharpest touch on the day and was crowned BBP Midlands Champion. "Putting has always been the strongest part of my game," commented the three-handicapper, "but this was still a completely unexpected victory.
There were some very tricky putts on the course so you had to pay plenty of attention to the slopes and roll them with perfect pace. I loved the Odyssey putter I selected and I'm excited to hear that by winning at place in the Grand Final I'll be collecting a custom fit Odyssey putter on the day - I'll definitely be choosing this one, it worked a treat!"
The three other competitors who secured a place in the BBP Grand Final are Runner-Up Nathan Williams (Lea Marston) and Semi-Finalists Stephen Vale (Mentmore GC) and David Atkins (The Belfry). They all now look forward to an exciting final of BBP at The Grove on October 13th 2012.
