Ping Women's Fitting: Gemma Pettit Handicap 38
Beginner golfer Gemma Pettit got fully fitted into the new Ping G Le3 range in a bid to accelerate her improvement
Gemma is a beginner golfer keen to start playing more golf and new clubs would be the catalyst to get her back out on the course playing and practising more regularly. Her current clubs were handed down to her and therefore not custom fitted, so she was excited to see what gains in performance a fully fitted set could achieve.
Fitter Analysis
It’s vitally important that beginner golfers are fitted with the right equipment from the start to allow them to play to the best of their ability. Gemma has been playing with a mixed bag of clubs and one initial observation was that she needs larger grips.
We explored the Lite and Ultra Lite shafts and Gemma preferred the feel of the Lite, which is the stiffer choice in the G Le3 range. Interestingly, her initial assumption was the reverse, leaning towards the Ultra Lite instead, a common misconception. Often when people experience a feeling that aligns with their preference, they tend to associate it with the opposite choice. But after analysing dispersion and distance, the 7-iron with a Lite shaft performed far better.
Gemma hit some great shots with a 9-wood, a club that she had never tried before. As we moved onto the driver, I was amazed that she said this was her worst club prior to the fitting because, although she felt a little nervous and unsure about it, she didn’t really hit a bad shot. Gemma should take some confidence from the results and get out on the golf course and enjoy the clubs.
Gemma's Feedback
I’m a novice golfer and I play with a really random set of clubs. They work okay, but I know they’re not an ideal fit for me now that I’m committed to improving. As I’m not technical, it’s easier for me to comment on the appearance and feel of the G Le3 clubs, which are stunningly sleek. Compared to my present clubs, they felt far more robust and solid behind the ball.
Being a woman doesn’t always mean that you need clubs with the lightest shafts and that was reaffirmed during my fitting process. Up until now, my driver has been my biggest nemesis, as it feels too whippy, so hitting a G Le3 driver fitted with a slightly heavier and sturdier shaft was a complete confidence booster for me. As for performance gains, I achieved more height and consistency with the G Le3 irons and I absolutely loved the 9-wood experience.
I was really struck by the friendly, normalising nature of the fitting process and it was great to figure out the set make-up that will help to improve my game.
