The final round saw Matsuyama needing to find a birdie at the 18th hole to force a play-off. An imperious iron shot to 5 feet set up the chance for the Japanese golfer to force the play-off, and he duly obliged, setting a new record in the process, as the only player ever to birdie the final hole in each round of the Memorial Tournament.
After Na found water from the tee in the first play-off hole, Matsuyama was afforded the luxury of needing a par to win, and achieved this with a superb up and down from the left hand rough.
Following the victory, Matsuyama said: “I’m really, really happy. It’s a dream come true to win at Mr. Nicklaus’ course.”
