How To Personalise Your Golf Clubs
We look at how TaylorMade can help golfers to better personalise their golf clubs
Golf manufacturers spend large amounts of money and time researching and designing their products and sometimes the final purchasing decision can come down to how it looks.
Nowadays, some of the major manufacturers are trying to cater towards our ever-changing needs by offering personalisation of their products with lettering and colours on the head, shaft and grip.
One of the newest developments is the TaylorMade MyStealth Plus driver. If you have an aversion to red, you can change the colour of the face to a choice of five other colours to suit your mood, wardrobe, or favourite team.
One of the reasons this is possible is how the carbon face on the Stealth Plus driver is made. So, I caught up with Tomo Bystedt, Director of Product Creation at TaylorMade to ask him how they do it.
Are there more personalisation options with carbon than steel faces?
The MySteath driver does give us a lot more personalisation options, because with a metal face you're very limited to what you can do visually.
Theoretically, you can put anything on the face. I could put a picture of the Mona Lisa on the face if I wanted to by printing it on top of the carbon underneath the polyurethane cover of the Stealth driver, which is clear. But for now, we just have the six colours for technical reasons.
What lengths did you have to go to?
How the paint and image interacts with the face is key, as it must have proper adhesion and inks have to be tested. The chemical composition of the ink that we use in the red paint actually influences the adhesion of the polyurethane on the face, so we had to test that as well. All the other five colours have also been vetted and once we learn more about how to make these – we can potentially expand the number of options involved in the design.
How important are all the personalisation options on your ranges? TaylorMade already did putters and wedges and now you do drivers, too?
I think personalisation is very important because consumers are expecting more of that now. For a long time, you've been able to do that with cars and get whatever interior colour you want and now you can also get it with things like shoes.
We feel golf is such an individual game that people don't want to be like everyone else. You don't want to show up with something looking like a bag of rental clubs. And so, you want to have whatever you think looks cool with a unique headcover and things like that. We know golfers value those things and our goal is to provide that as best as we can.
Is this only available online from TaylorMade
It is available on our website, but you don't have to buy it from TaylorMade. We obviously want our retailers to be healthy and be able to take advantage of these opportunities. If you like shopping at your local pro shop, you’re going to be able to get MyStealth there, too.
