European Ryder Cup captain: Who fits the bill?
This week’s golf debate is sure to centre on Nick Faldo’s successor as Ryder Cup captain for the 2010 showdown at Celtic Manor
This week’s golf debate is sure to centre on Nick Faldo’s successor as Ryder Cup captain for the 2010 showdown at Celtic Manor, with Jose Maria Olazabal a major candidate.
The European Tour’s 15-man tournament committee meet in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, ahead of the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, to discuss the appointment of a new captain.
Olazabal, speaking after Europe’s defeat to Asia in the Royal Trophy at the weekend, said of the job: "There are things we will all keep in mind if I become captain of the Ryder Cup.
"It's up to the players to say how good a captain I was. I'll talk to them and see how I can improve."
Scot Sandy Lyle has also thrown his hat into the ring as Europe plan to regain the Ryder Cup that was surrendered to the US at Valhalla last September.
"I can't see any reason why not me," said the five-time Ryder Cupper.
"As available captains go, there aren't an awful lot. I look the favourable choice. My only worry would be Woosie."

So, there appears to be three main candidates. Who do you want to see take on Corey Pavin’s men next year? Who would do the best job? Should Nick Faldo be granted another crack? Who shouldn’t be selected, and why?
