Jordan Spieth is, unsurprisingly, the man who everyone will be keeping an eye on this week at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.

With no Rory McIlroy in the field, Spieth, who won the John Deere Classic recently, has a chance to become world no. 1 with a strong result.

Jason Day will be aiming to secure a second consecutive title after his RBC Canadian Open win, and, like Spieth, will be among the favourites to win the USPGA Championship next week.

GM tips for this week

USA 1: Rickie Fowler - There is no doubt that Fowler is enjoying an impressive season. Don't be surprised to see him add to his Players Championship and Scottish Open titles in Akron.

USA 2: Jordan Spieth - It's difficult not to back a man who has won two majors this year and came mighty close to a third at St Andrews. He warmed up for the Open by winning the John Deere and could prepare for the USPGA Championship in the same way.

Great Britain: Danny Willett - A recent win at the Omega European Masters and a T6 finish at the Open mean Willett is one of the most in form Brits about and a solid bet.

Ireland: Shane Lowry - The Irishman's short game is top drawer and he's certainly due a win. If he can putt well this week he should be in contention.

Scandinavia: Henrik Stenson - A couple of top two finishes this year mean Stenson's game has been close to the standard required. If minor things go his way this week he could well take his first title of the year.

Rest of Europe: Sergio Garcia - The Spaniard has been both close and consistent in recent weeks (finishing T18, T25 and T6 in his last three events) and will believe that a first win of the year is not far away.

Africa: Louis Oosthuizen - One of the Open's fall guys, Oosthuizen will be eager to bounce back at the USPGA Championship. The WGC Bridgestone presents an opportunity for him to prepare in the best way possible.

Asia: Anirban Lahiri - A two-time winner on the European Tour this year, Lahiri can be counted on to produce solid, consistent golf.

Australasia: Adam Scott - The Australian won at Firestone Country Club in 2011 and that may prove the only thing to separate backing him or countryman Jason Day.

South America: Camilo Villegas - The Colombian is out of form, but playing in such a strong field may enable him to raise his game.
