62 THE ALWOODLEY
Architect: Mackenzie 2006 position: 81 Stats: 6,673 yds; par 72; SSS 73 GF: £55-£90 T: 0113 268 6800 W: alwoodley.co.uk
Hear the name Dr Alister Mackenzie and images of the tall pines, huge undulating greens and beautifully kept water hazards of Augusta National spring to mind.
The Scot was one of the game’s most accomplished course architects and his first design at Alwoodley, has little in common with Augusta.
It lies between Leeds and the Yorkshire Moors where the brisk winds and rugged natural terrain present significant potential danger.
A straight out-and-back layout, Mackenzie was able to create a good variety of holes that shape in both directions to pose a fine test of ball striking. NT
+ Beautiful setting; excellent atmosphere; never gets too busy - 10th hole is a touch disappointing; back nine lacks front nine’s variety
