This understated and largely unaltered Surrey gem dates back just over a century. Length is not its main defence, but the golfer must try and position his ball in the correct place on each fairway in order to play to the correct part of the subtly-contoured greens. Even on the longer holes driver is often not the best option as swathes of heather or well-positioned bunkers are placed at driving distance to ensure that you will never simply overpower the course. Recent work has seen the landscaping of the stream across holes 1, 2, 17 and 18.
Panellists' comments: "A first-class traditional members' club"; "A number of memorable holes - the 3rd, 8th and 11th stick in the mind"
