Dispel any thoughts that the New Course is actually new, or that it is a second course. This excellent test has been in play since 1913 and stretches to over 7,000 yards off the purple tees. A relatively gentle start belies what is to come with a superb battery of tough par 4s, and encounters with the heather and sand. It may have fewer stand-out holes than the Old, but the flow and balance are better. Off course the traditional clubhouse is packed with character and history and the whole visitor experience manages to be both polished and personal - a tough combination to pull off.
Panellists' comments: "Excellent greens full of both subtle and distinct borrows"; "A course to be enjoyed by the big hitter"
