Architect: Fernie Stats: 6,641 yds, par 71, SSS 73 GF: £175 Visitor information: Visitors, May to October on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday only W: royaltroon.co.uk 2008 Ranking: 24 (No Move) Improvements since 2008 Rankings: Course: None Clubhouse: None
An eight-time host of the Open, Troon is a severe test and golfers really need to make their scores on the outward nine as the prevailing wind can make the homeward journey, with its series of fearsome par 4s, an extremely difficult ride. The 8th, the famous Postage Stamp, is the shortest, but many would say trickiest, par 3 on the Open roster.
Panellists' comments: "A good mix of short and long par 4s"; "A very official but warm welcome"; "Tee shot at 11 is not for the nervy"
