"Blown upon by mighty winds, breeder of mighty champions," is how Bernard Darwin described Royal Liverpool, and looking at the prevailing weather conditions and list of Hoylake winners it's hard to disagree with him. The course is uncompromising in the extreme. Ill-conceived or weakly executed shots are punished severely and when the wind is whipping in off the Dee this is not a place for the faint-hearted. Major bunker works, the introduction of areas of ‘broken ground' and a new 17th green in the last two years keep this links up with the competition.
Panellists' comments: "Hoylake has a special feel that can only be experienced in the flesh"; "Not the prettiest but is there tougher?"
