100 Sherwood Forest
Architect: Colt, Braid Stats: 6,732 yds, par 71, SSS 73 GF: £35-£55 Visitor information: Play from designated tees W: sherwoodforestgolfclub.co.uk 2008 Ranking: N/A
The first four holes loop back to the clubhouse and serve as a tasty hors d'oeuvre before you head off into the forest itself for a feast of fine golf. Heather, bracken, fern and silver birch will catch the wayward, and it's important to make your score going out.
Into the wind, the closing seven holes provide as tough a heathland test as you will find. One of those courses for which the term 'best kept secret' should be carefully reserved, and without doubt one of the very best courses in the Midlands, making up a strong local trio long with nearby Notts and Coxmoor.
Panellists' comments: "A real, hidden-away gem"; "Exceptional value, with all the ingredients needed for a perfect day's golf."
