Whalsay GC
Whale Of A Time!
Whalsay Golf Club is on the Isle of Whalsay, an hour north of the main town of Lerwick including a short ferry crossing. The 6140 yards, par 70 course is the most northerly 18 holes in Britain, established in 1976 by a small group of local fishermen.
It is Whalsay?s physical setting that makes it one of the most unique courses in Britain. A pod of killer whales came into the bay by the 7th fairway last year. The Shetland Isles are, of course renowned for wildlife; you will see seals, gannets, cormorants, perhaps an otter playing in the seaweed and dozens of other species.
Not only is it a marvel on the eye but Whalsay can be a tough test especially if there?s a wind, and rarely is there not. For golfers seeking solitude and revitalisation as well as a chance to meet some of the friendliest folk in the UK, Whalsay Golf Club stands head-over-heels above the rest.
Best Hole: The seventh, last year a pod of killer whales were seen from the fairway.
Green Fees: £15 per day
Address: Skaw Taing. From Lerwick take the A970 to Voe then Laxo to ferry. Land at Symbister and the club is six miles north.
