Royal Birkdale GC
Royal Birdale has hosted two Ryder Cups, the Walker and Curtis Cups and eight Opens (the Championship is due to return in 2008), making it one of the most famous names in golf. Any collection of course reviews is incomplete without an insight into a game on this famous, old links. So we though it only fair to check it out for ourselves.
Judging the effects of the wind here is half the battle as the holes are constantly changing direction and you can expect the wind to be fairly strong. So keeping the ball low should help you keep it in play. The 183 yard par 3 12th which features a tiny plateau green flanked by gaping bunkers either side and sand hills to the left, right and rear epitomises Birkdale's charm. As always steering clear of the traps is a must.
The 18th is renowned as one of the world's finest finishing holes, its well bunkered green set against an unusual white clubhouse. Take some time to enjoy a beer afterwards in the clubhouse to take in the challenge you've just completed.
Best Hole: The final hole is fair but demanding. A long par 4 that requires two strong hits and cool head on the green.
