Carnoustie has a reputation as a bit of a beast after the '99 Open as many of the best players in the world were made to look distinctly average in the wind and rain. But in its day to day existence, Carnoustie isn't quite the ferocious animal it was made to look - fairways are more generous and the tees aren't set miles back. What you get is a tough but playable championship track that you'll never forget.
The first five holes are all par 4s that you'll need to get through with a decent score in tact. Anyone whose taken the time to look at their scorecard will notice the severity of the finishing stretch. Three par 4s all over 400 yards and one par 3 over 240 yards that often play into the teeth of the wind make up one of the toughest finishing straights the golf world has to offer.
The hotel is a prime position overlooking the 1st and 18th tees of the Championship course. Gauranteed tee times are available to hotel residents but you'll be spoilt for choice as there are over 200 courses within two hours drive of the hotel.
Best Hole: There are plenty to choose from but the 18th will evoke fond memories of Van de Velde going mental. Just try not to do the same thing.
